Alison McKenna: Walking Towards Silbury Hill
We are pleased to offer this special edition to mark the exhibition Moon Shrines, Water Springs and Sacred Flares (7 Jun 2024 – 13 Jul 2024) by Alison McKenna.
Walking Towards Silbury Hill, 2021 is one of the images from her Common Land series of photographs “…taken in April and Dec 2021 on visits to various sites, including Greenham Common Nature Reserve (formally Greenham Common USAF Air Base and the site of a 19 year long peace protest by women against nuclear armaments), and the neolithic monuments of Avebury and Silbury Hill in Wiltshire at the dawn of the Winter Solstice.
By decorating the images with inks and colour washes, I aim to reveal the ‘energetics of place’, that in many instances have restricted access (not least to a woman in the possibly hostile environment of open countryside) or have been energetically disrupted by roadways.”
Silbury Hill is adjacent to the standing stones of Avebury and is one of the most significant sacred gathering places of the Western landscape. The artist approaches the hill form with arms outstretched.
